The Montrose Board of County Commissioners received notice this week that the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) awarded the county a $1 million grant to be used for the indoor arena and event center. The much anticipated announcement came following a visit from DOLA Executive Director Irv Halter and DOLA Regional Manager Ken Charles.
“This is tremendous news,” said BOCC Chairman Glen Davis. “This proposal was a group effort led by County Manager Ken Norris, and we are pleased with the result. We would like to recognize and thank DOLA, Director Halter, and Manager Charles for helping stimulate the economy on the western slope with this grant for the indoor arena and event center. We are confident this project will positively impact our community.”
The indoor arena and event center is a capital project on the north end of the fairgrounds property that is scheduled to be finished in early 2018. The request for proposal (RFP) for the project was sent out last week and responses are due May 17th. Once the county thoroughly vets the proposals, awards will be provided in-line with each phase of the project (Phase I- July 2016; Phase II- January 2017; Phase III- January 2018). The indoor arena and event center is anticipated to be approximately 160,000 square feet featuring a 40,000 square foot arena, meeting rooms, a ticketing area, stables, and over 1,000 added parking spots.
